A Beautiful Christmas Family Photography Experience in Central London
Last Christmas, we had the pleasure of photographing and filming a lovely Indian family who travelled all the way from Manchester to London to celebrate a truly special milestone, their tenth wedding anniversary. There is something wonderfully fitting about marking ten years of marriage in a city as romantic and storied as London, especially during the festive season, when every street corner seems to sparkle with a little extra magic.
The couple had been living in Manchester for around three years, and both work as doctors within the UK healthcare system. Anyone who has worked in medicine knows just how demanding that career path can be, so making time to properly celebrate a personal milestone like this is not always easy. It made the occasion feel even more meaningful. They travelled down to London with their adorable and endlessly energetic little daughter, turning what could have simply been an anniversary into a proper family adventure, combining their celebration with a memorable London family photography and videography experience they could treasure for years to come.
For the husband in particular, this was about far more than booking a photographer for an afternoon. We spent around four hours together that day, weaving through some of the most recognisable and romantic locations in central London, all wrapped in that particular magic that only a London Christmas can bring.
Getting Ready at Zedwell Piccadilly Circus
We first met the family at Zedwell Piccadilly Circus, right in the heart of the city, where they were getting ready for their special day. Their daughter arrived already full of energy, and honestly, that energy never really let up throughout the entire session. She brought plenty of fun, giggles and spontaneous little moments to the beginning of our time together, setting the tone for a shoot that felt genuinely joyful rather than stiffly formal.
While the family were getting ready, we helped them choose and coordinate their outfits for the day. They had a lovely idea in mind, combining beautiful traditional Indian clothing with more modern Western outfits, which gave us a wonderful variety of styles and moods to capture as the day unfolded. There is something really special about photographing a family who wants to honour both sides of their story like this, blending heritage and modern London life into one shared visual narrative.
The stylish, modern interior of Zedwell Piccadilly Circus, with its striking reception area, also gave us a lovely starting point for some photographs before we headed out into the cold December air. Soft indoor lighting, clean lines and a touch of festive decor made for a gentle, intimate opening chapter to the day, quite different in feel from the bustling streets that awaited us outside.
Christmas Family Photography at Trafalgar Square
We began the outdoor portion of our London family photography session just before sunset, timing things carefully so we could capture some beautiful natural daylight before the Christmas lights and that magical evening atmosphere took over as the main event.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square, one of London’s most iconic and recognisable locations, where the Christmas decorations and general festive buzz provided a truly wonderful backdrop. There is a certain grandeur to Trafalgar Square at Christmas, with its towering tree, the fountains, and the constant gentle hum of visitors and locals enjoying the season together.
We photographed the whole family together as a unit, as well as individual portraits of the couple, and separately of their daughter, who seemed to find endless delight in every new corner of the square. We also made sure to capture plenty of natural, unposed interactions between them all. Rather than orchestrating every single frame, we let their personalities and genuine family connection come through naturally. Those candid, in between moments, a shared laugh, a hand reaching for another, a child pointing excitedly at something in the distance, often end up being the photographs families treasure most.
From Trafalgar Square, we made our way towards Leicester Square and Covent Garden, soaking up the Christmas atmosphere as we went and continuing to photograph the family amongst the twinkling lights, decorations and the ever lively streets of central London.
Exploring Covent Garden and Leicester Square
Christmas in London creates such a genuinely unique atmosphere for family photography, and this session was a perfect example of why. The lights, the decorations, the architecture and the busy, cheerful streets all combined to provide countless opportunities for photographs that feel distinctly and unmistakably London.
As we wandered through Covent Garden and Leicester Square, we captured a lovely mixture of formal family portraits, more intimate couple photographs, and plenty of candid moments involving their little daughter, who by this point had well and truly settled into the adventure of the day. She brought so much life and energy to the session that there was genuinely never a dull moment, and keeping up with her became half the fun of the shoot itself.
For us, these natural, unscripted family interactions matter just as much as the more formal, composed portraits, sometimes even more so. Years from now, photographs that capture a child’s true personality and the easy, affectionate way a family interacts with one another often become the images that are treasured above all the rest. A perfectly posed portrait is lovely, but a photograph that captures exactly who someone was at that particular age, in that particular season of life, becomes something else entirely as time passes.
A Second Outfit and Afternoon Tea at Hotel Café Royal
After a good stretch of exploring central London, we returned briefly to Zedwell Piccadilly Circus for a second outfit change, giving the family a chance to warm up and transition into the next chapter of their celebration.
From there, we continued on to one of London’s most elegant and iconic hotels, the historic Hotel Café Royal’s Cakes and Bubbles, tucked right in the heart of Piccadilly. The family settled in to enjoy a beautifully presented traditional English afternoon tea, arranged on an elegant three tier stand filled with delicate sweet ice cream sandwiches and an assortment of desserts, all accompanied by classic champagne glasses for the occasion.
This gave us an entirely different setting and mood to work with compared to the lively, festive streets outside, trading Christmas bustle for quiet, refined luxury. As the couple raised their champagne glasses to toast ten wonderful years of marriage, we were able to capture their anniversary celebration through both professional photography and videography, preserving that particular moment of quiet joy and reflection.
It was a genuinely fun and slightly unexpected part of the day too. Our professional lighting equipment ended up attracting quite a bit of curious attention from people passing by outside the hotel windows. A few passers by seemed to pause and wonder whether they were witnessing some sort of special celebrity celebration taking place inside. In a way, of course, they were exactly right. Every anniversary like this deserves to feel like the special occasion it truly is.
Romantic Anniversary Photography on Regent Street
After their celebration at Hotel Café Royal, we made our way towards Regent Street to bring the day to its close. With London’s famous Christmas lights stretching gloriously overhead along the entire length of the street, it created an especially romantic and cinematic setting for their tenth wedding anniversary photography.
We photographed the couple walking together hand in hand, embracing beneath the lights, and sharing quiet, romantic moments beneath the glow of one of London’s most beloved Christmas displays. There is something quite poetic about ending a decade long love story on Regent Street at Christmas, surrounded by light, warmth and the joyful chaos of the festive season in full swing around them.
By the time our four hours together came to an end, we had walked through some of the most beautiful and recognisable corners of central London, watched a family celebrate a genuine milestone with warmth and laughter, and captured a day that this couple, and their daughter, will be able to look back on for many years to come.
